A lot of work has been done on board since last summer. The steering system with its rudder horn has been permanently installed as it proved to function very well. All the gates have safety locks that prevent them from opening accidently. The model of the locks is copied from an old railway carriage that we found at the narrow gauge railway in Mariefred.
We have also spent quite some time planning for all the armatures. The machine room is very small so the challange is to place the armatures in the right place.
Olle has built a pipe for the bottom outlet. It is important to use it frequently in order to get rid of mud that collects in the bottom of the boiler. We have also dismounted a flange on the bottom side of the boiler. Unfortunately, but not unexpectingly, three out of four pin bolts broke as they were severely rusted. After some struggle we managed to remove the rest of the bolts without damaging the threads. Phew!! :-)

The machine room is too narrow for this machine so we have to plumber carefully to make everything fit properly. In the picture you can see the bend of the ejection pipe, the air pump and the foundation of the feed water pump. |
| Plumbering seems to be 90 percent planning and only 10 percent bending pipes. In order to get a grip of how we want all armatures to fit we have started to build consoles and mount them. Here you can see the turbine in what we think (so far :-) is the right position. We are a bit afraid that the bulkhead will help transferring the vibrations to the hull thus making it noisier. ... which also is temporarily fitted. Anders has made a flange which has one curved side in order to fit to the hull. So far there is no hole through the hull until we have decided to mount the valve permanently. Hopefully we will not forget to make the hole! :-) |

And eventually... we have been able to buy the steam engine and the fire engine thas was mounted in S/S Robert until 1977. A school nearby Stockholm bought the equipment some twenty years ago and has since then kept it in good condition. Thanks to the management of the school and a teacher named Kjell Bensing the equipment will in the future be kept together with S/S Robert. The purpose is not to reinstall the old machine in S/S Robert but to keep on preserving it for the future. |
