Renovation of S/S Robert, September 1997

On this page you can find out what happened on S/S Robert during the period August - September 1997.

SmokechestIn this picture itīs possible to get a good clue about how the smokechest will look when itīs finished. It is supposed to be all white except for the handles and the hinges that will be black. (Which can partly be seen in the picture of the machine down below.) It has been quite a struggle to get the double plated doors to close firmly to the corresponding surface on the smokechest but we think this will do just fine. (sept -97)
Next step in order to refurbish the boiler is to mount the fire door and the death beds. This is necessary in order to be able to decide the length of the grating bars. We intend to use the original parts whenever it is possible. The construction holding the fire door has two cracks (of wich at least one can be seen clearly in the picture) and has to be repaired. In the picture you can see the construction disassembled for inspection. (summer -97) Fire door
Machine The machine without connecting rods and eccentric rods. We are about to lift the cylinders aside so that we can refurbish the machine bed and set it up correctly with the crankshaft in line with the propelleraxis. Åke Persson, chief on S/S Ejdern, has helped us with some advice how to indicate the right position of the machine bed. It can be done by measuring the movements of the crankshaft when itīs fitted both in the bearings and to the axis and then is turned around. Only this work will keep us occupied for a couple of weeks (grin). In order to be able to lift the cylinders conveniently we have mounted an "I-iron" in the roof over the machine. (okt -97)
WWWHPC (WWW Home Page Constructor) Tomas while proudly examining the stack. It feels great to have finished one subprojekt on S/S Robert. Alf Kvist, former owner of magnificiently refurbished S/S Östa, once said to me that owning a steamship always leads to more work than you ever, ever can imagine. And to tell the truth Iīm beginning to realize that he was right. But at the same time itīs great fun so why worry? You just canīt hurry a 131 year "lady", can you? (summer -97) Stack
Manometer Still in the home of Tomas but we long for the moment when we can mount them at the boiler and on the machine of S/S Robert.
