Renovation of S/S Robert, july 1998

The cabin is tried outThe building of the cabin has advanced a great deal during the summer. Olle and his pal Malte have done most of the job in a nearby carpenting. The cabin frame has been built in sections to enable us to move it to the ship and test it in its proper place. The pictures on this page have all been taken by Tomas when the frame was first put together on S/S Robert.

There are clearly advantages with being able to work in a carpentry shop with access to machinery that makes the job easier. At the same time there is a risk that the cabin wonīt fit when it is finally placed on board. But thanks to careful measurements we were successful and in the picture you can see Malte, Anders and Olle adjusting the lower part of the cabin against the bend of the dead work - something that has to be done on the spot where it belongs. Cabin Our purpose is to be able to lift away part of the superconstruction of S/S Robert to facilitate the lifting of the boiler and the engine. Among other things part of the superconstruction and the deck under the cabin can be screwed off. It is thus important that the cabin too is so strongly built that it will stand being lifted off in some strong strops even after having been used for a couple of years.
Tomas is inspecting the space in the future cabin. How will it really feel to stand here some fine day and steer? How well can we see through the "windows" and will there really be room enough for a little table to put the charts on? Tomas inside the cabin
Floor More and more parts are fitted on the engine. We have at the same time put checkered floor plates around it to make it a bit more comfortable to stand there. Before itīs possible to run the engine we will probably have to make some protection to prevent us from slipping into the engine with our feet.
It will be smashing, wonīt it, when the parts, polished and fine, are mounted in their places. But the hardest job does not consist of painting and polishing. To make the engine work well there is a demand to adjust every detail so that no ruptures or play exist. It is a very trying job but it will hopefully give results at the test run.

By the way, do you know what the engine dram is? It is, according to the former owner Folke Nyström, the dram that the engine staff takes during the first heating for the season. The dram should be taken when the engine is being heated and makes its first half rev. It cannot be denied that it will be very nice to be able to envite to the very first engine dram in Robertīs engine room after the renovation.
